What is a Cyclone?

The word cyclone is derived from the Greek word cyclos, its meaning is coiling of the snake. So cyclones rotate inwardly into an area of low atmospheric pressure.

Cyclone, any large system of winds that circulates about a center of low atmospheric pressure in a counterclockwise direction north of the equator and in a clockwise direction to the south.

A cyclone describes a weather system characterized by swirling winds around a low-pressure center. Cyclon originates over the sea and travels about 300 to 500 km a day. It draws heat energy from the ocean water. Cyclone releases energy equivalent to a few hydrogen bombs. The diameter of cyclones varies from 150- 1000 km but their effects dominate thousands of square kilometers of the ocean surface.

Types Of Cyclone

Tropical Cyclone

Tropical Cyclones are formed over the tropical ocean regions. It is of two types-Hurricanes & Typhoons. Hurricanes are found in the Atlantic and Northeast pacific whereas Typhoons are found in the Northwest Pacific. Tropical Cyclone defines on the basis of their wind rates- First Category, Second Category, Third Category, Forth Category, Fifth Category.

Polar Cyclone

Cyclone in the polar regions such as Greenland, Siberia, Antarctica is cyclones. In winter polar cyclone gets heavier than a tropical cyclone.

Meso Cyclone

A mesocyclone is formed when the portion of the thunderstorm cloud begins to spin. It is the air that rises and rotates around a verticle axis. It occurs in the same direction as low- pressure system in a given hemisphere.

Causes Of  Cyclone

A Cyclone is caused by atmospheric disturbance around a low-pressure area and is usually accompanied by violent storms and severe weather conditions.

“When warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from near the surface, a cyclone is formed. When the air rises up and away from the ocean surface, it creates an area of lower air pressure below. It causes air from the surrounding area with high pressure to move towards the low-pressure area which further leads to warming up of the air and causes it to rise above.”

As the warm, moist air rises and cools the water in the air from clouds. The complete system of clouds and wind spins and grows, along with the ocean’s heat and water evaporating from the ocean surface.

As the wind system rotates and increases speeds, an eye gets formed in the middle. The center of a cyclone is very calm and clear with very low air pressure. The difference of temperature between the warm, rising the cooler environment causes the air to rise and become buoyant.

Gulab Cyclone

Gulab Cyclone was named by Pakistan and it was a tropical cyclone. It affected the coasts of South Odhisa and North Andhra Pradesh. The North Indian Ocean Region covers tropical cyclones formed over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. The 13 members, which come under the region are Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Yemen.

Gulab Cyclone was 270 km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odhisa and 330 km east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. After Yaas Cyclone, Gulab Cyclone was the second cyclonic storm to hit Odhisa in four months.

Shaheen Cyclone

Cyclone Shaheen was formed from the remnants of Gulab Cyclone. As per the weather agency effect of cyclone Shaheen has to be seen in Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat. They said there is the possibility of heavy rain in these states.

Effect Of Shaheen Cyclone

The latest information about Shaheen is that approx 10 people have died after the tropical Shaheen cyclone battered parts of Iran and Oman. Shaheen Storm arrived on Sunday in the area, with winds between 120 and 150 km/hr (75-93mph). Thousand have been evacuated from the coastal region in Oman. Street in the capital Muscat has been submerged.

In Iran, authorities said, six people thought to be fishermen were killed in a port in the southeastern province of Sistan- Baluchestan. Infrastructure including electrical facilities and roads were damaged.

Four people including a child had already died due to flooding. Flights to and from Muscat were suspended and residents in the coastal areas were argued to evacuate. A cricket match between Oman and Scotland was abandoned due to the cyclone.

Authorities cut off the power supply in al-Qurm, east of Muscat, to avoid any incident, and some 2700 were placed in emergency shelters. Parts of the neighboring United Arab Emirates are now on standby as the weather system moves west.
