What Is Hariyali Teej

Hariyali Teej is one of the important Teej in all three Teej which is celebrated by Indian women. The other two teej are: Kajri Teej and Haritalika Teej. Hariyali Teej is celebrated in the month of monsoon when there is more greenery, hence it is named Hariyali Teej. It is observed on the third day of the bright half of the Shrawan’s lunar month. It is also referred to as Singhara Teej. It is also known as Sawan Teej, Choti Teej and Madhushrava Teej.

At this festival folks’ songs, special dances, fairs and swings are performed. Women wear green dresses and perform special pooja on this day.

Timing: The auspicious time of worship is from 6:30 AM to 8:33 AM mins.

Why Is Hariyali Teej Celebrated

Like other festivals, this festival has an exciting history behind it. Hariyali Teej is dedicated to Goddess Parwati and her union with Lord Shiva. On this auspicious day, Lord Shiva accepted Mother Parwati as his wife. Therefore, this fast has special significance for married women of Indian Hinduism.

What Is The Specificity Of Hariyali Teej

It is a festival of decorating and spreading happiness. To this day women keep fast for the long life of their husbands and for their prosperity and happiness. Women offer green coloured things to Goddess Parwati because Goddess Parwati is considered to be a form of nature. Women also make up items for Goddess Parwati. During the worship women also listen to the story of Hariyali Teej.

Method Of Hariyali Teej Pooja

It is believed that on this day married women should observe “Nirjala Vrat”, during which they should not even drink water throughout the day. Women observing fast on this day can break their fast only after worshipping the moon.

During this, the idols of the Goddess of Parwati and Lord Shiva are kept together and worshipped with religious hymns and songs. So that the festival can be celebrated with full joy and enthusiasm. It is also believed that married women should perform Hariyali Teej at their parent’s house.

On the auspicious day of Hariyali Teej married woman presents herself with shringala items such as traditional dresses, bangles, henna, indoor and sweets from their in-laws. Women mainly wear lehnga or saree on this day. These shringala objects are a symbol of marriage and have significance for married women. Wearing them is also considered a good sign. According to Hindu tradition, it is believed that by wearing 16 ornaments  (16 Srinagar)a wife can protect her husband from evil.

This practice of giving Sindara is especially important for newlyweds. As part of the ritual, the women go to their parent’s house to celebrate Hariyali Teej. They enjoy the festival with their friends and relative by swinging, songs and delicious food (Like Ghevar- Sweets is prepared particularly for this festival.)
