Introduction

Non- Resident Indian Day is also known as Pravasi Bhartiya Divas. This day is celebrated once every two years on 9th January to mark the contribution of Non- residential Indian Community towards the development of the country. It is celebrated to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the government of India and reconnect them with their roots.

History

On 9 January 1915, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa, which led to India’s freedom struggle. Therefore 9 January was chosen to celebrate this day as Pravasi Bhartiya Divas. Traveler Indian Day was first celebrated in 2003. Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) was conceived at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Sammelan held on January 9, 2006, in Hyderabad. This allowed people of Indian descent and their spouses living abroad to come to India and live and work here indefinitely.
